I think this is very, very inappropriate. THis is a support group, not an
forum for your making money.
Shame on you.

I am extrememly proud to announce that I was accepted to attend the LAF
Survivors Summit with a full scholarship. The summit is being held in
Austin, TX the home of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. If anyone on this
list is also attending please let me know and we can arrange to get
together. http://livestrong.org If you go into the store you can get a
fantastic Survivors notebook for free. You do not have to buy anything, but
if you do like bracelets you support the foundation.
The goal set out for us is to first listen to some experts. "The opening
session will energize you through powerful statements of survivorship and
declarations of action by people affected by cancer. Then, former U.S.
Surgeon General Antonia Novello, Ph.D., and author Jim Collins will each
give a keynote address to lead you into the Summit weekend, focusing on the
needs of cancer survivors and the idea that by working together, anything is
possible."
Then a free night out in Austin. They are expecting 800 to 1000 survivors.
I have already been communicating with about 20 via e-mail and a website one
survivor set up. On Saturday "A keynote address by LaSalle D. Leffall, Jr.,
M.D., F.A.C.S., President's Cancer Panel Chair, will introduce the
Identifying Unmet Needs roundtable session, where you will brainstorm the
unmet needs currently faced by cancer survivors. The session will be
facilitated by roundtable leaders." and "FasterCures Chair Mike Milken will
give a keynote address to kick off the Brainstorming Possible Solutions
roundtable session. You will hear the most common themes resulting from the
Identifying Unmet Needs session and then will brainstorm possible solutions
to those needs. Again, the session will be facilitated by roundtable
leaders." After lunch "You will learn how to develop a personal action plan
through a case study panel moderated by Andy Miller, director of
survivorship programs at the LAF. Panelists Richard Nares, Tamika Felder,
Susan Shinagawa and Genne' McDonald will share their personal experiences
with cancer and explain, within the context of an action plan, how they each
identified and executed solutions to meet the needs of cancer survivors." A
rally closing session for the day and then dinner at the Austin Music Hall.
On Sunday "U.S. Senator John Kerry will share his inspirational story of
cancer survivorship. Seated in your same roundtable arrangements, you will
hear the most common themes resulting from the prior day's Brainstorming
Possible Solutions session before working individually on your own personal
action plans." Then an award ceromony and adjournment.
I am very excited. The three days will be grueling with travel and all but
meeting all these other survivors and brainstorming with them to develop a
personal action plan will be thrilling. I will let you know how it all went
when I return. The summit is Oct 27-29. Hope you are all doing very well
on your personal wellness plan. My best of great health and happiness to
all of you.

Just wanted to let you know that my osteoporosis has excelled at a high rate. Two years ago the local medical center decided that they would try Zometa IVs every three months. A year later I went to a bone research doctor in Denver and he said that I the standard was only once a year. Zometa is a trial drug not yet approved for osteoporosis, but because my osteo was so bad, they thought that it was the best treatment. Unfortunately, they now believe that the every three month treatments made my bones brittle. I was taking my calcium, hiking and faithful with my weight bearing exercises (all the right things) when my pelvis fractured with no trauma. (stress fracture from walking and hiking) I am only 56 years old and it is very unusual for someone my age to have this happen. The doctors are starting to think that it was from the Zometa. I had radiation and chemo about 8 years ago. I wasn't warned about how fast osteo can come on. I am writing to warn everyone one who
has had cancer treatment,to be on full alert for osteoporosis. Especially if you can't take hormones. The doctors now believe that along with your calcium, you need to take high doses of vitamin D. Higher than what comes with standard calcium supplements. They are doing a study right now that is starting to show that high doses of vitamin K also helps prevent and rebuild bones.
If your doctors recommend that you try Zometa. Please be sure that you are only dosed once a year. The study on this drug is not complete, and I was a guinea pig. I may have been ok with one treatment a year, but the local docal podunk doctor overdosed me. There is a new med. that has been proven to increase bone mass, but you can't take it if you have had radiation. There is hope that in two years there will be a new med that is supposed to increase bone mass. It is still being researched and studied.
In the meantime, I am walking around like a glass doll. Only two months ago I was working as a back country ranger. Now I am in a walker and wheelchair. Sooooooo ladies......beware. Take your calcium, extra D and extra K. That's the only thing I know to do right now.
Regards,
Bunny
