Soy Processing
Influences Breast
Cancer
This study puts
another nail in the soy supplement coffin as an
effective way to lower the risk of breast cancer.
Highly purified soy foods and supplements marketed
in the US may stimulate the growth of pre-existing
estrogen-dependent breast tumors according to
Professor William Helferich. " In Asia, soy foods
are made from minimally processed soybeans or
defatted, toasted soy flour, which is quite
different from soy products consumed in the US.
Isoflavone-containing products in the US have lost
many of the biologically active components in soy,
and those partially purified products,(which
contain concentrated genistein) sold as
supplements, caused tumor growth in our study."
What's the moral here? Don't tamper with
Mother Nature! When the mice were fed soy flour
with MIXED isoflavone content (which is more like
the Asian diet) there was no increase in tumor
growth. The damage is done in the processing and
isolation to make a more expensive product. So use
soy flour and leave the supplements
alone.

Isoflavone Interferes with Breast Cancer
Drug
So, Dr. Helferich went
on to look at this same isoflavone, Genistein, and
found it enhanced the growth of estrogen-dependent
breast cancer, the most common type found in women
over 50. But the scary news was discovering
isoflavone supplements prevented tamoxifen from
stopping tumor growth.
Blood concentrations of genistein were
similar to levels found in people taking
isoflavone supplements. "Self-medicating with soy
supplements to prevent menopausal symptoms while
undergoing chemotherapy interefered with
tamoxifen's benefits."
I'll take this one step further. The mass
marketing of refined soy products to women as a
"natural, safe" alternative to estrogen therapy
will result in an ever increasing rate of breast
cancer if women don't reign in their fear of
"hormones" and understand that "natural" means
17-beta estradiol.

Weight and Body
Composition Change with
Chemotherapy
Doctors have argued
with their patients regarding significant weight
gain during chemotherapy for breast cancer,
blaming the women for drowning their sorrows in
food. Well, this study should button a few lips
(and I don't mean the patient's!) When a study was
actually done looking at the effects of
chemotherapy on a woman's body, scientists
discovered that by three weeks there was a
significant loss of both muscle and bone mass and
a big increase in visceral or deep body fat.
Yup...the Buddha Belly syndrome roars its ugly
head, increasing significantly the risk for heart
disease, strokes etc.
Chemotherapy affects the adrenals and most
women on it do not take any hormone therapy.
Unfortunately, this is again another
misperception, because 17 beta estradiol SLOWS
DOWN tumor growth as opposed to synthetic
estrogens and progestins. Just goes to show you
how complicated and lopsided oncologic therapies
are today. We save you from cancer, but kill you
off with a heart attack!

Dry Eye Syndrome Due to Thyroid
Antibodies
If you have thyroid
antibodies, you have a much higher risk of
developing Dry Eye Syndrome, according to this
study. It seems our lacrimal, or tear glands, can
easily be damaged by thyroid antibodies, resulting
in fewer tears and more abrasion to our
eyes.
As you know from my newsletters and my
book "You're Not Crazy It's Your Hormones!" taking
selenium can help lower thyroid antibody levels.

Carotid Thickness Affected by
Subclinical
Hypothyroidism
Subclinical
hypothyroidism (SCH) is not a condition to "wait"
for treatment until it's "clinical" if you read
this study. Researchers examined the thickness of
the carotid artery (an indicator of your risk for
a stroke) and found that lipid changes seen in SCH
caused early changes in the carotid wall. When T4
therapy was given, not only did the lipid profile
improve BUT so did the carotid artery wall
thickness. So, if you have a TSH above 2 and an
abnormal cholesterol profile, it may be time to
start thyroid therapy.

Coffee Reduces Adult
Diabetes This is the ying to my yang in this
newsletter, because I didn't want you to think
EVERYTHING was ALWAYS bad for you! Men who drank
approximately 5 cups of "full octane" coffee had
half the odds of developing Type 2 diabetes than
those who abstained from caffeine. Women only
midly improved their risks by guzzling high
caffeine products, again showing that gender
differences in metabolism affects our risks for
various
diseases.

Diet Affects
Depression and
Schizophrenia I'm just letting you
know about this one, because it's funded by a
company who is developing ethyl eicosapentaenoic
acid, a synthetic form of EPA, a fatty acid found
in cold water fish such as salmon and mackerel. A
higher refined sugar intake along with high dairy
product consumption was associated with a worse 2
year outcome for schizophrenia, while a low intake
of fish and seafood exacerbated depression. This
study makes an intesting point: the dietary
predictors of heart disease and diabetes are
similar to those of schizophrenia and depression.
Only recently have doctors begun to advise their
patients to start with a diet change for the first
two conditions, so why not start to treat mental
illness in a similar manner?

Could Vitamins Raise Bad Cholesterol
Levels?
Two studies have recently cast doubt on
the "benefits" of nutritional supplements. The
first one examined Vitamins E, C and beta
carotene, and found they blocked the activation of
the cholesterol breakdown pathway. However, they
did discover that omega fatty acids counteracted
this effect.
In a separate study, only postmenopausal
women with a particular gene found in 14% of
Caucasians benefited from Vit E/C therapy when it
came to preventing heart disease.
