RE: heart rate during aerobic exercise

re losing weight during exercise

remember that your body will burn calories differently depending on how much
you're exerting yourself...you'll either burn carbos, fat or use up muscle
fiber (yes you'll consume your own protein) depending on the level of
exercise. The harder you are working the less likely you'll burn any fat.

For FAT-BURNING - typically the target heart rate for fat burning is about
180 beats per minute, minus your age. Hence if you're 40, your heart rate
should be about 140 to be burning fat. If you go much higher than that, and
you'll just burn carbos and muscle fiber. Remember "go for the burn"? That's
your muscles burning up, not your fat. So if you want to lose weight, don't
go there.

In a fat-burning range the exercise will not be too difficult. When I run,
to keep my heart in the low 140s, I have to go quite slowly. In fact, it's
easy. However, to burn significant amounts of fat, you'll have to do the
activity for a long time. 40-60 minutes is a good idea. If you can work up
to that, 6 days a week, you'll trim down.

Best bet is to buy a heart rate monitor and keep a close track on what your
heart rate is during a given activity. It doesn't matter the activity, you
just have to keep your intensity at the proper level to maintain a given
heart rate. Also depending on what kind of cardio shape you're in, different
activities may put you beyond the target range. If you're out of shape,
running is probably not the answer to burn fat - even a slow jog may put you
way past your heart rate limit for fat-burning. So experiment, try running,
biking, swimming, even fast-walking, the key is to find something you enjoy
enough to do a LOT and for LONG periods.

GOOD LUCK

Sarah
